Skateboarding FAQ — beginners & BUTR Spots
Clear answers on beginner skateboarding, safety, family sessions, and the BUTR Spots map.
- What is BUTR Skateboarding?
- BUTR Skateboarding uses skateboarding as a tool to help individuals and families build healthier, more active lives. We offer the BUTR Spots map, educational blog guides, and skate-inspired products on our shop.
- What is the difference between www and the shop?
- www.butrskateboarding.com is the marketing site and Spots map. shop.butrskateboarding.com is where you browse and buy products. Blog posts are written in Shopify and mirrored to www for search.
- How do I open the BUTR Spots map?
- Go to BUTR Spots. (Older links to
/SpotListredirect to/spots.) - How do I find skate spots near me?
- Open the map, explore shared locations near you, select a spot, read the details (features, photos, notes), then plan your session. Pick a place that matches your goals—not only the biggest park.
- Is BUTR Spots only for skateparks?
- No. Parks are useful, but many great sessions happen on smaller public places—smooth flat ground, quiet beginner areas, small banks, or simple ledges—when they are appropriate and publicly accessible.
- How do I add or pin a skate spot?
- If you find a suitable public location that is missing, add a pin with an accurate position, a clear photo, a short honest description, main features, and useful surface notes. Accurate beats hyped.
- What should I not pin?
- Do not pin private property, restricted areas, unsafe places, or locations where public access is unclear. Respect local rules, residents, and pedestrians.
- I'm an adult beginner — where should I start?
- Start on smooth, quiet flat ground away from traffic. Focus on balance, pushing, and stopping before parks or technical features. Our blog guides on warm-ups, pushing/stopping, and returning to skating are good next reads.
- How should I warm up before skateboarding?
- Use a short dynamic warm-up (about 5–8 minutes): light movement, ankle/hip mobility, a few easy squats, then gentle board rolls. Prefer moving while cold over long static stretches. See How to Warm Up Before Skateboarding.
- Can I skateboard with my kids?
- Yes, with age-appropriate readiness, helmet and pads, short supervised sessions, and safe surfaces. Children under 5 should not ride skateboards per common AAP-aligned guidance; ages 6–10 need close adult supervision. See Skateboarding with Kids.
- What gear do beginners need?
- A properly fitting certified helmet every session; pads (knees/elbows/wrists) are strongly recommended for beginners; closed-toe grippy shoes; one rider per board.
